Meeting #11: Green Petal Using Resources Wisely



Meeting #11: Clover Petal “Using Resources Wisely”
Supplies:


·         Daisy Kit/Kaper chart
·         Snackbox
·         Empty paper towel rolls
·         Peanut butter and birdseed


Snack & Pre-Meeting:  Read Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel or The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry

Opening & Business: Stand in horseshoe, do pledge and say Promise and Law.  Pass a daisy, say your favorite thing to do outside.

Song:

(motion: girls hold hands in circle one way, then sing again going the other)

Daisy Circle:  What was the resource being used in the book?
• Did the characters use resources wisely? What happened if they did/didn’t use them wisely?
• Why is it important to use resources wisely?
• What was your favorite part of the story?

Talk about camp.

Activity: Make toilet paper roll birdfeeder.  Put around school grounds or in plastic baggies to take home.

Game:  “Daisy Chain” (scouts scatter through room, we congo to each girl, saying "Hey there Daisy, what's your name?" "Abby" the rest of the congo says: "Welcome Abby to the Daisy Chain!" and congos on to the next girl.

Closing: Do friendship squeeze.   Everyone says “1-2-3 Goodbye Daisy Girl Scouts” and twists out of circle.



Meeting #10--Yellow Petal Friendly & Helpful



Meeting #10: Yellow Petal “Friendly and Helpful”
Supplies:

·         Masking tape
 
Snack & Pre-Meeting:  Talk about our visitor today (police officer)

Opening & Business: Stand in horseshoe, do pledge and say Promise and Law.  Pass a daisy, say one thing you do to be helpful around the house.

Daisy Circle:  Talk about Helpers (introduce Police Officer). What are some helpful things a policeman does?  What can we do to be helpful to a police officer?   Talk about being friendly.  Ask:
·         How does it feel when someone is friendly to you?
·         How does it feel when someone is unfriendly?
·         What are some things you can do to make people feel welcomed and included?
·         What do you do to help out at home? At school? In Girl Scouts?
·         Why is it important to help others?

Game:  “Friendly or Not?”

1. Ask the girls to stand single-file along the marked line (use masking tape or other demarcation)

2. Tell girls that you are going to call out some behaviors, or ways that people act. Girls should decide if the behavior is friendly or not friendly. If they think it is friendly, they should jump to the “Friendly” side of the line. If they think it is not friendly, they should jump to the “Not Friendly” side of the line.

·         There is a new student in your class. You invite her to play with you and your friends.
·         A girl from school smiles and says hello to you on the playground. You don’t say anything and go find your friends.
·         Your friend Maddie tells you that you should only play with her and not any of your other friends.
·         You invite some kids from your neighborhood over to your house to play. You share your
favorite toys with them.
·         You are playing tag on the playground and you get “tagged.” You don’t want to be “it” so you shout out, “I don’t want to be it. I’m not playing anymore!”
·         Your mom’s friend Mrs. Kale comes over to your house to see your mom. Your mom asks you to open the door. You open the door for Mrs. Kale, smile and say hello.
·         You’re making teams to play a game at school. You only choose your friends to be on your team and you tell the other kids that you don’t want them on your team.
·         Your older sister is so annoying sometimes. Sometimes she bosses you around and makes fun of you, so you make fun of her.
 ·         At a Girl Scout meeting, your friend Celia drops her fruit snacks on the dirty floor. There aren’t any extras. You help Celia pick up and throw away her fruit snacks. Then, you share some of yours with her.
·         Your birthday party is coming up and you invited all the girls from your class. A new girl just moved to town and joined your class. You invite her to your party.

Activity: Make Epsom Salts for Mom

Closing: Do friendship squeeze.   Everyone says “1-2-3 Goodbye Daisy Girl Scouts” and twists out of circle.

• Thank you card for Mrs. Jones

Snack & Pre-Meeting: Read “Olivia Goes Camping”

Opening & Business: Stand in horseshoe, do pledge and say Promise and Law. Pass a daisy, say what you like best about being a Daisy.

Daisy Circle: Remind them of visit with Mrs. Jones, say that we still need to write her a thank you card. Write card together, all girls sign the card. Introduce 4th grade troop to talk about camp. Tell about what they can expect at Camp, SWAPS, etc.

Activity: Make SWAPS for Camp with big girls.

Closing: Do friendship squeeze. Everyone says “1-2-3 Goodbye Daisy Girl Scouts” and twists out of circle.

Meeting #8: Magenta Petal “Respecting Authority”

Supplies:

  • Daisy Kit/Kaper chart
  • Snackbox
  • Books on authority
  • Big thank you cards to decorate

Snack & Pre-Meeting:  Talk about who is the main authority figures in their lives (parents).  Read “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein Where the Sidewalk Ends 30th Anniversary Edition (rpkg): Poems and DrawingsGirls can evaluate whether or not the character showed respect to an authority figure and if there was a good or bad outcome because of that.



Opening & Business: Stand in horseshoe, do pledge and say Promise and Law.  Pass a daisy, say what you want to be when you grow up.

Daisy Circle:  Talk to the girls about what it means to be someone with authority and why they should be respected for their knowledge.  Ask the girls to give examples of people with authority in their homes, schools, places of worship or communities. Examples: teachers, principals, police officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, parents, troop leaders, judges, CEOs, job supervisors and babysitters.


• Who is the person you respect the most?

• How do you show that person you respect them?

• How does it make you feel when someone with authority asks you to do something?

• What could you do to show others that you are respectful?

• Have you ever been disrespectful to someone with authority? What happened?



Introduce an authority figure in our school, Principal Mrs. Jones.  Think of some questions to ask Mrs. Jones

Activity: Write Mrs. Jones a big thank you note for coming to our meeting.

Closing: Do friendship squeeze.   Everyone says “1-2-3 Goodbye Daisy Girl Scouts” and twists out of circle.

Meeting # 6: World Thinking Day and Rose Petal "Making the World a Better Place"

·         CD Player/CD (if I can find some Mexican kid songs)

·         Cups

·         Seeds

·         Dirt

·         Glue, paper, markers



Snack & Pre-Meeting: Read a children's book from Mexico



Opening & Business: Stand in horseshoe, do pledge and say Promise and Law. Pass a daisy, say your name and one thing you did over Winter break.

Daisy Circle:

Part 1: World Thinking Day- Mexico

Find USA on the globe; find Mexico on the globe (if I can find one :)

What do we know about Mexico? Foods they eat? Clothes they wear? Holidays they celebrate?

What things do girl scouts in Mexico do that we do here in the United States?



Talk about Mexico scouting info sheets (attached)



ACTIVITY: Play a Mexican childrens CD- dance!!



Part 2: Rose- Make the world a better place

We're part of the world, Mexico is part of the world- the world is a big place. Can we help the world, even if we’re small? How?



Recycling

Planting flowers, plants, trees

Saving energy

Using resources wisely is in our Law- what does that mean?

Being kind

Helping others is part of our Law- how might that help the world?



Activity: Plant a seed.

Closing:
Do Daisy Hands, friendship squeeze.

Ask girls to say a wish for the world & then send their squeeze around the circle.
